At our house, the only good June bug is a dead June bug.

[large picture] [super size]

.
These brown June bugs fly around at night and are attracted to the lights. Especially in the spring here in Texas they are very prevalent.

This one was found the morning after, on March 31, 2008, laying dead on our back porch. Texas June bugs come earlier than in most places. Most places they come in June, hence their name.

The evening before we could hear just a whole lot of them running into the windows, attracted by the lights inside our house.

One last thing, Texas June bugs are about an inch long, a lot of places they don't get nearly that long.

June Bug! . . . No, It's October, 2007, Bug (NOT) -- and two (2) items for "Didya know?" -- and one (1) lagniappe

October Bug could not be found. I wonder where he went?

--Didya know? President Bush is going to put out the fires around San Diego so the Houston Texans can play football there in QUALCOMM Stadium this Sunday? (link)

--Didya know? It's been "A Rainy Night in Georgia?" Those people have been waiting a long time for this rain.
BTW, it has been discovered that "the end of the rainbow" is at the A-ANOTHER STORAGE facility. This picture proves it!

--the lagniappe: Wet Pants Story

A nine-year-old was kid sitting at his desk when suddenly there is a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he cannot possibly imagine how this has happened. It's never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they'll never speak to him again as long as he lives.

The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and prays this prayer, "Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from now I'm dead meat"

He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.

As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and inexplicably dumps the bowl of water in the boy's lap. The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, "Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!"

Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym short to put on while his pants dry out. All the other children are on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone else - Susie.

She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. "You've done enough, you klutz!"

Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and whispers, "You did that on purpose, didn't you?"

Susie whispers back, "I wet my pants once too."

Spiders And Flies (link)

Lies
Only lies
Spoken by runaway eyes
I don't hear what they say
When they talk this way
Though they say everything twice

Spiders and flies
We're caught in a web and we're eaten alive
Spiders and flies
We're caught in a web and we're eaten alive

Earth is shaken
God forsaken
Paradise was overtaken
Smiles are taken
Lives are taken
Till the sleeping eyes awaken

Defy and deride
All in the name of our pride
Earthquakes and hurricanes
Wind and endless rains
Always the Earth will abide

Spiders and flies
We're caught in a web and we're eaten alive

With a smile they hope you believe in the lie
With a smile they hope you believe in the lie
When they talk this way
Leave the world this way
And they try to say I'm the one out of my mind
When we walk away
I am caught in a web and I am eaten alive

Spiders and flies
We're caught in a web and we're eaten alive

June Bug . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Yes, It's June Bug (2007)

Click here for my Wordless Wednesday post today.
.
.
We caught him! This is the mean little leprechaun who pushed me down the stairs while we were visiting in Ireland.

I ended up falling down a few very hard stairs. The fall knocked a finger out of joint and broke my right kneecap. I'm still recovering.

Read about that nasty incident (click here) on my May 26, 2007, blog.

The little June Bug leprechaun was found hiding out in a gift shop in Killarney.

We knew right away we could capture this little guy, kidnap him back to the states, and give him to our youngest granddaughter (GC#4 link). Then she would keep him locked forever with her collection.
.
.
Isn't her collection nice? I counted 25 here, there are a couple of duplicates.
.
.
.
.

She looks pleased, doesn't she? When her relatives travel, her first request for souvenirs is to bring her back snow globes from where we visited. We brought her six this time, five were from some of the states we had visited going and coming, then of course the captured leprechaun.

Here are the places she has in her collection:

Snow globe list
1. St. Petersburg
2. Paris
3. Seattle
4. Calgary Canada
5. Ireland
6. Tower Bridge London
7. Minnesota
8. Denver
9. Buckingham Palace
10. Whistler
11. Alabama
12. Chicago
13. Traverse City Michigan
14. Ohio
15. Arizona
16. San Francisco
17. Virginia
18. Iowa
19. Calgary Canada
20. New York
21. MGM Las Vegas
22. Kentucky
23. Pennsylvania

Her immediate goal is to be able to get them from every state in the Union. Later on she will concentrate more on the different countries and perhaps some logical collector themes.

Just in case you have one around that is collecting dust, you could mail it down to Texas. It would be most appreciated by this little lady!

It's June Bug! . . . . . . . . . . . No, It's May (2007) Bug!! . . . . . . . . . . . .Does "Hero" here have pretty legs?

[click picture to enlarge]
.
This guy's name is "Hero."
.
Hero is a nice, friendly, long-leg, thin brown conehead katydid, species neoconocephalus triops.**
.
We call him Hero because he is one. One day our dog, Adi, was playing out on the golf course, which we call a part of our extended backyard. It was a hot day and the grass was wet from the afternoon watering.
.
I wasn't watching Adi very closely, as it was pretty hot day, Texas Spring, for me to be outside--outside our nice airconditioned house.
.
The neighbors have a large German shepherd called Vaughn Braum who is never allowed outside without his leash. This day was the exception.
.
Right away Von Braum Vaughn Braum spotted poor Adi. Needless to say Adi's brisstling back hair didn't scare Vaughn away one bit.
.
Vaughn was poised to maul poor little Adi right there in the open, now being witnesses by several neighbors. These neighbors were making a loud commotion trying to call Vaughn off, to no avail.
.
Adi didn't retreat, but stood her ground firmly, even after the first attempt at her throat. I'm proud of Adi.
.
But being proud didn't save the day. It was Hero to the rescue.
.
Hero, unbeknownst to us, and for unknown reasons, had lodged herself in Adi's right ear.
.
Proabably out of fear for the large shepherd, Hero jumped out and clamped her jaws right down on Vaughn's left eyeball.
.
That was enough, Vaughn, yelping all the way, ran back to her house. Adi came home pretty fast after that, generally she mozies home at a leisurely pace.
.
Since then we have kept Hero on our back porch. She doesn't care to have a cage, we did get her a plastic 8 x 8-inch box and keep plenty of fresh greens and water there for her.
.
I don't know how long she will live, we are thinking she will probably die before winter. If not then we have a warm place for her in the kitchen window.

It's June Bug! . . . . . . . . . . . No, It's April (2007) Bug!!?

This one's Karen's car, it's
a 1982 or so Pine Wood Derby Racer
.
Karen did most of the work, Mrs. Jim and I were consultants for her.
.
She won first place. Of course technology has improved since then so it probably couldn't keep up with the modern cars. Dad was the chief speed advisor for her project. Mrs. Jim did the fashion painting advice. Karen did [most of] the work.
.
Please enlarge the picture by clicking on it so you can see the driver pretty good. The driver is a piece of lead fishing weight, carved to precision weight with the car weighing 1 ounce less than the maximum.
.
The paint is acrylic blue with a red, green, and blue butterfly on the hood. There's a rainbow at the rear, and some green growth with a flower on the deck lid. If we were smart, we could have sensed a tree-hugger growing up here with us.
.
Weight distribution is 63% in the rear wheels, 37% up front. The uplift in the back functioned better than a spoiler in keeping the car hugging the track surface. Many cars tipped and fell off or tumbled, hers went straight down the slotted hill track.
.
Also compare it with Cliff's grandson's car (link for enlargement, link for Tuesday, April 24, blog post with the picture and write up). His car did good too!
.
It would be interesting to race these two cars now, '82 model vs. '07. Twenty-five years difference!
.
Bets, anyone?

It was Ghost! I found her here, in the snack room, getting ready for a nice little visit. And maybe a snack.
.

.
There is more to this cat 'tale.'

Most of the time Ghost stays in the administrative area or up front in the living room. When she strays into the bedroom wings she bears watching.

Often she will go into a room of a very sick resident and climb up on the person's bed. She will snuggle up to the resident as if to comfort that person.

Very often that resident will die soon afterwards while Ghost is still there. Somehow she can tell that the person is about to die and just wants to be there in case, as if she knows she might be needed.

One person she comforted had an unexpected heart attack and died. Somehow she knew beforehand.

I wasn't told how she got her name but I have a few guesses.

Both Ghost and Tiger, a Manx cat, were taken in as strays that came to the nursing home to hang around.

June Bug, June Bug! . . . No, its October Bug!

.
October bug really isn't a bug at all. I found her climbing our wall by the back door. That is a brick she is clinging to, wedging herself against the door frame.

I wonder where this creature is now? I hope she can find food and water. A lot of those little white bugs come to the window in the door every warm night, then they die there. I think she will have plenty of food to help her grow up fine.

What will she look like when she grows up? I sure don't know. I don't even know what she is. Do you?

June Bug, June Bug! . . . No, its September Bug!

Isn't this a weird sort of September Bug?

Only on the Internet!

Robots on Yahoo! News Photos:

"A 'Winebot,' or a robot that can taste, fires off a beam of infrared light from its left arm to a bottle of Shiraz, and tell the kind of wine during a demonstration at a laboratory in Tsu, central Japan, Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2006.

Some of the light is absorbed and the light that returns is then analyzed in real time to determine the object's chemical content.

Researchers at NEC System Technologies and Mie University have designed the robot, a mechanical sommelier, that is able to identify dozens of different kinds of wine, cheeses and hors d'oeuvres. (AP Photo/Shizuo Kambayashi) "

June Bug! June Bug! It's Brown, It's Brown!

.
Until last night this was the only June Bug we have had this summer. It was in the dining room, just barely crawling along. After a couple of photo ops I released it; I really think it was done for.

Most June bugs only live a short while. They come to the lights, fly around, and die. Of exhaustion? Maybe a heart attack?

What color: brown, of course. Never green. Now it seems it all depends on where you came from as to what a true June bug is. Here's my kind (I'm a native Nebraskan):

To be fair to Rachel (April 17 blog), the article further goes on:

So Rachel is correct too, as she is from the south, born and raised??

Why until last night? Because last night another one came, bit the dust, and was lying on the back door mat this morning.

It's June Bug!. . . . . . . . . .No, it is May Bug!

.
And a lot of them!!
[click picture to enlarge]
.
.
Remember the April bug? (link) Well, these are May bugs but they came early, a whole bucket we found, all those in the picture were here in April.
.
We do have a few June bugs now too, there aren't very many yet so the birds can eat them about as fast as they appear.
.
May bugs have another name, after the place they live in. You see they live in the mud and are also called mud bugs.
.
Southern people eat these mud bugs. They are boiled with a ears of corn and whole potatoes (enough for every eater to have at least one) and highly seasoned. The tail meat can be breaded and deep fried, put in etouffee (link) or gumbo, and a lot of other Southern dishes.
..
The best way to eat the boiled ones is to bite the head off and suck the juice out. Then split the tail and eat the meat that was inside. Some people dip the tail meat in cocktail sauce or tartar sauce.

This April bug had a lot of babies. They all came running away when I squashed their mommy. I got most of the babies squashed too.

There were two real June bugs (brown) on the porch tonight. They are early, a lot will come in June. So for now, we have mostly April bugs like this one.

We will be glad when May comes, our May bugs are rather nice unless one bites somebody.

I forgot to add, since this is Texas, our April bugs are larger than elsewhere, unless they emigrated. Do any of you have a few of our Texas April bugs at your place?
