My cars #001 -- 1949 Ford Pickup -- With my broken foot, I didn't have a car until Dad loaned me his pickup

In college I broke my foot during my last semester, third semester freshman, at Lincoln. It was initiation night at Pershing Rifles and we pledges had to march from six p.m. until midnight. After midnight the actives couldn't do a thing to us.

At midnight it was tradition for the pledges to de-pants the actives. The fellow my friend and I drew wanted to keep his pants on so he kicked. It knocked me backwards some. (Where is this going?)

About 1:30 or so I walked the mile to my rented room out on 13th Street. The next morning I couldn't walk on that foot. I took the bus that morning to the infirmary where they discovered I had broken my foot, a metatarsal, probably the second metatarsal, (Widipedia link) (it could have been the first) in the right foot.

My dad felt sorry for me as I couldn't walk that mile any more. The first week or so I was on crutches, then on a walking cast for six more. Dad offered the loan of his pickup, a black 1949 Ford. I sure did take him up on that, fast! Dad never did know the real way I broke that foot.

That January I dropped out of college. Of course I didn't tell my parents and for sure didn't give the pickup back. In about four months I was able to get a job at the Elgin Watch Factory in Lincoln. I still didn't give the pickup back but finally I did tell that I had dropped out of school and had the job.

Working was fun for me, I was tired of going to classes. Notice I didn't say tired of studying because I didn't ever study. I didn't in high school and I wasn't about to in college. Better to tell the truth, I didn't know how to study.

That pickup even went to the rodeo in Ames, Iowa, to the beach at Linoma Beach quite often, and on some (???descriptive?term????) dating. In fact I had a steady girl for the first time in my life, she worked at Elgin too.

In another month or so, Dad had it figured out. He told me that maybe I should be getting a car of my own, did I want to do that? You see in those days, at least in Nebraska, kids couldn't buy cars until they were twenty-one unless a parent signed.

My first car was a 1950 Studebaker Starlight Coupe that had belonged to Elmer Cells, my high school principal and chemistry teacher. He was Dad's good friend as well as Mr. Morrow's (Cliff's Dad--I think Cliff's family is related to the Cells). He had traded his Studebaker in on a new car and WE, Dad and I, got this one from the Ford dealer in Tekamah.

Studebakers aren't very tough cars, that one didn't take the abuse I wanted to give it, so it gave up. Wouldn't you know it, just about the time I was trading it in for my second car? It depreciated a whole $200 in one week because it wasn't running very good when I brought it back a week later to get my used 1952 Ford.

The wild, yes, because we have let this bed grow wild. As soon as people do that around here, those blackberries move in.

It's been a month since I updated this blog. Even though it is now unlisted, people are still checking it. When I retire from this retired life I may get to blogging more.

So I found a couple of happy thoughts from my friend Merle's blog March 11 post and am dropping them in here. She puts these classic jokes on her blog about every other day, please check her out.

First:

The Laws of Work. ~ ~ ~

If you can't get your work done in the first 24 hours,

If it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done.

"If you're using it on your legs, don't shave for a couple of days."

Farmer wages aren't all that good

A man owned a small farm in Missouri.

The Missouri State Wage and Hour Department claimed he was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to interview him. The agent starts out demanding:

"I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them,"

"Well," replied the farmer, "I have four farm hands that have been with me from three to five years. I pay them each $200 a week plus they get free room and board."

"Then there's the cook that has been here for 18 months. I pay her $150 per week plus she also gets free room and board."

"Then there's the half-wit who works about 10 hours every day and does about 50% of all the work around here. He makes about $115 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night. He also sleeps with my wife occasionally."

"That's the guy I want to talk to. The half-wit!" says the agent.

"That would be me," replied the farmer.

Letter 300 years old found in files of Record

This letter was found in a 1900 Herman Record among some papers belonging to Mrs. Sara Swan, by her son, Harry Swan of California, who with his family was visiting his mother, Mrs. Sara Swan and his wife’s father, Mr. James Van Horn. The old papers had belonged to Mr. Swan’s father, the late Harry Swan, who was editor of the Herman Record from 1918 until
1935.
The editor at the time this letter was published was Mr. Garrison and ‘as given to Mr. Garrison by Mr. H.C. Cooper, father of Mrs. Louie Fitch end Mrs. D.Y. Rutledge. Mrs. Fitch says that Mrs. Lydia Bates Fletcher is a distant relative of her family.

“Most dearly beloved sister, Governor Winthrop has informed us that ye Lyon will soon set sail for England so I will give this letter to Richard Gardner, who will bring it to you when he come to Scrooby, that you may know how we are faring in the new land. While we have endured many hard ships one repents not, he has come hither or desires to go back for we count happiness enough that we are free to enjoy God and Jesus Christ. We will shortly have a church in a settlement near here, which is called Boston and there will soon be many others for all do exult in ye escapt from oppression and are happy to continue here. Robert made ye journey to Plymouth which is more than 12 leagues, from here, hoping to find where ye body of our dear brother, Moses is laid, but as you know the place was made into field so that ye savages might not know how many had died and he could not find ye spot but it is with God. He sleeps by ye side of James Chilton and his wife and many others you used to know. Mary Chilton is grown into a fine woman and is happily wedded and has three children. Elder Brewster is in good health but his hair is white like snow. Love and W restling Brewster are both married and are fine men.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave.

When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell.

Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a dead ringer.

And that's the truth...Now, whoever said History was boring ! !

An atheist holiday

In Florida, an atheist became incensed over the preparation of Easter and Passover holidays. He decided to contact his lawyer about the discrimination inflicted on atheists by the constant celebrations afforded to Christians and Jews with all their holidays while atheists had no holiday to celebrate.

The case was brought before a wise judge. After listening to the long passionate presentation by the lawyer, the Judge banged his gavel and declared "Case dismissed!"

The lawyer immediately stood and objected to the ruling and said, "Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and many other observances. Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah...yet my client and all other atheists have no such holiday!"

The judge leaned forward in his chair and simply said, "Obviously your client is too confused to even know about, much less celebrate his own atheists' holiday!"

The lawyer pompously said, "Your Honor, we are unaware of any such holiday for atheists. Just when might that holiday be, your Honor?"

The judge said, "Well it comes every year on exactly the same date---April 1st! Since our calendar sets April 1st as 'April Fools Day,' consider that Psalm 14:1 & Psalm 53 states, 'The fool says in his heart, there is no God.' Thus, in my opinion, if your client says there is no God, then by scripture he is a fool, thus April 1st is his holiday! Get it?"

I don't know if this story is true but it’s definitely worth reading. It brought tears to my eyes.......I hope you enjoy it, too.......

One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry.

He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.

Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water! She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it so slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?"

You don't owe me anything," she replied. "My mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness."

He said ... "Then I thank you from my heart."

As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was stronger also. He had been ready to give up And quit.

Many years later that same young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.

Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes.

Immediately he rose and went to her room to see her. He recognized her at once. After examining her he returned to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to her case.

After a long struggle, the woman improved and the battle was won.

Senior citizens are constantly being criticized for every conceivable deficiency of the modern world, real or imaginary. We know we take responsibility for all we have done and do not blame others.

HOWEVER, upon reflection, we would like to point out that it was NOT the senior citizens who took:

The melody out of music,

The pride out of appearance,

The courtesy out of driving,

The romance out of love,

The commitment out of marriage,

The responsibility out of parenthood,

The togetherness out of the family,

The learning out of education,

The service out of patriotism,

The Golden Rule from rulers,

The nativity scene out of cities,

The civility out of behavior,

The refinement out of language,

The dedication out of employment,

The prudence out of spending,

The ambition out of achievement,

God out of government and school.

And we certainly are NOT the ones who eliminated patience and tolerance from personal relationships and interactions with others!!

And, we do understand the meaning of patriotism, and remember those who have fought and died for our country.

What about the last verse of My Country 'tis of Thee? "Our father's God to thee, Author of liberty, To Thee we sing. Long may our land be bright, With freedom's Holy light. Protect us by Thy might, Great God our King."

Just look at the Seniors with tears in their eyes and pride in their hearts as they stand at attention with their hand over their hearts!

YES, I'M A SENIOR CITIZEN!

I'm the life of the party...... even if it lasts until 8 p.m.

I'm very good at opening childproof caps.... with a hammer.

I'm usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going.

I'm awake many hours before my body allows me to get up.

I'm smiling all the time because I can't hear a thing you're saying.

I'm very good at telling stories; over and over and over and over...

I'm aware that other people's grandchildren are not nearly as cute as mine.

I'm so cared for -- long term care, eye care, private care, dental care.

I'm not really grouchy, I just don't like traffic, waiting, crowds, lawyers, loud music, unruly kids, Toyota commercials, Tom Brokaw, Dan Rather, barking dogs, politicians and a few other things I can't seem to
remember right now.

I'm sure everything I can't find is in a safe secure place, somewhere.

I'm wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that's just my left leg.

I’m having trouble remembering simple words like..

I'm beginning to realize that aging is not for wimps.

I'm sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen?

I'm wondering if you're only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?

And, how can my kids be older than I feel sometimes?

I'm a walking storeroom of facts..... I've just lost the key to the storeroom door.

Yes, I'm a SENIOR CITIZEN and I think I am having the time of my life!

Now if I could only remember who sent this to me, I wouldn't send it back to them, but I would send it to many more!

Two old ladies were sitting on a park bench outside the local town hall where a flower show was in progress.

One leaned over and said, " Life is so darn boring; We never have any fun anymore. For $5.00, I'd take my clothes off and streak through that stupid flower show!"

"You're on!" said the other old lady, holding up a $ 5.00 bill.
The first fumbled her way out of her clothes and, completely naked, streaked through the front door of the flower show.

Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by loud applause.

The naked lady burst out through the door surrounded by a cheering crowd.

"What happened?" asked her waiting friend.

"I won 1st prize as Best Dried Arrangement."

A Minister concluded that his church was getting into serious financial troubles.

Coincidentally, by chance, while checking the church storeroom, he discovered several cartons of new Bibles that had never been opened and distributed. So at his Sunday sermon, he asked for three volunteers from the congregation who would be willing to sell the Bibles door-to-door for $10 each to raise the desperately needed money for the church.

Peter, Paul and Louie all raised their hands to volunteer for the task. The reverend knew that Peter and Paul earned their living as salesmen and were likely capable of selling some Bibles but he had serious doubts about Louie.
.
Louie was just a little local farmer, who had always tended to keep to himself because he was embarrassed by his speech impediment. Poor little Louis stuttered very badly. But, not wanting to discourage poor Louis, the reverend decided to let him try anyway.
.
He sent the three of them away with the back seat of their cars stacked with Bibles and asked them to meet with him and report the results of their door-to-door selling efforts the following Sunday.

Anxious to find out how successful they were, the reverend immediately asked Peter, "Well, Peter, how did you make out selling our Bibles last week?" Proudly handing the reverend an envelope, Peter replied, "Reverend,using my sales Prowess, I was able to sell 20 Bibles, and here's the $200 I collected on behalf of the church." "Fine job, Peter!" The reverend said, vigorously shaking his hand. "You are indeed a fine salesman and the Church is indebted to you."

Turning to Paul, he asked "And Paul, how many Bibles did you manage to sell for the church last week?" Paul, smiling and sticking out his chest, confidently replied,"Reverend, I am a professional salesman and was happy to give the church the benefit of my sales expertise. Last week I sold 28 Bibles on behalf of the church, and here's $280 I collected." The reverend responded, "That's absolutely splendid, Paul. You are truly a professional salesman and the church is also indebted to you."

Apprehensively, the reverend turned to little Louie and said, "And Louie, did you manage to sell any Bibles last week?" Louie silently offered the reverend a large envelope. The reverend opened it and counted the contents. "What is this?" the reverend exclaimed. "Louie, there's $3200 in here! Are you suggesting that you sold 320 Bibles for the church, door-to-door, in just one week?" Louie just nodded.

"That's impossible!" both Peter and Paul said in unison. "We are professional salesmen, yet you claim to have sold ten times as many Bibles as we could." "Yes, this does seem unlikely," the reverend agreed. "I think you'd better explain how you managed to accomplish this, Louie."

Tips for the Holidays

1. Avoid carrot sticks. Anyone who puts carrots on a holiday buffet table knows nothing of the Christmas spirit. In fact, if you see carrots, leave immediately. Go next door, where they're serving rum balls.

2. Drink as much eggnog as you can and quickly. You can't find it any other time of year but now. So drink up! Who cares that it has 10,000 calories in every sip? It's not as if you're going to turn into an "eggnog-aholic" or something. It's a treat. Enjoy it!!!! Have one for me.
Have two. It's later than you think. It's Christmas!

3. If something comes with gravy, use it. That's the whole point of gravy. Gravy does not stand alone. Pour it on. Make a volcano out of your mashed potatoes. Fill it with gravy. Eat the volcano. Repeat.

4. As for mashed potatoes, always ask if they're made with skim milk or whole milk. If it's skim, pass. Why bother? It's like buying a sports car with an automatic transmission.

5. Do not have a snack before going to a party in an effort to control your eating. The whole point of going to a Christmas party is to eat other people's food for free. Lots of it. Hello???

6. Under no circumstances should you exercise between now and New Year's. You can do that in January when you have nothing else to do. This is the time for long naps, which you'll need after circling the buffet table while carrying a 10-pound plate of food and that vat of eggnog.

7. If you come across something really good at a buffet table, like frosted Christmas cookies in the shape and size of Santa, position yourself near them and don't budge. Have as many as you can before becoming the center of attention.
They're like a beautiful pair of shoes. If you leave them behind, you're never going to see them again.

8. Same for pies. Apple, pumpkin and mincemeat - have a slice of each.
Or, if you don't like mincemeat, have two apples and one pumpkin. Always have three. When else do you get to have more than one dessert? Labor Day?

9. Did someone mention fruitcake? Granted, it's loaded with the mandatory celebratory calories, but avoid it at all cost. I mean, have some standards.

10. One final tip: If you don't feel terrible when you leave the party or get up from the table, you haven't been paying attention. Reread tips: Start over, but hurry, January is just around the corner.

Remember this motto to live by: "Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in
hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO-HOO what a ride!"

Subject: The Cowboy boots

(Anyone who has ever dressed a child will love this one!)

Did you hear about the Texas teacher who was helping one of her kindergarten students put on his cowboy boots?

He asked for help and she could see why. Even with her pulling and him pushing, the little boots still didn't want to go on. By the time they got the second boot on, She had worked up a sweat.

She almost cried when the little boy said, "Teacher, they're on the wrong feet." She looked, and sure enough, they were. It wasn't any easier pulling the boots off than it was putting them on. She managed to keep her cool as together they worked to get the boots back on, this time on the right feet.

He then announced, "These aren't my boots."

She bit her tongue rather than get right in his face and scream, "Why didn't you say so?", like she wanted to. Once again, she struggled to help him pull the ill-fitting boots off his little feet.

No sooner had they gotten the boots off when he said,
"They're my brother's boots. My Mom made me wear 'em."

Now she didn't know if she should laugh or cry. But, she
mustered up what grace and courage she had left to wrestle
the boots on his feet again.

Helping him into his coat, she asked, "Now, where are your Mittens?"

He said, "I stuffed 'em in the toes of my boots."

She will be eligible for parole in three years.

At our house, the only good June bug is a dead June bug.

These brown June bugs fly around at night and are attracted to the lights. Especially in the spring here in Texas they are very prevalent.

This one was found the morning after, on March 31, 2008, laying dead on our back porch. Texas June bugs come earlier than in most places. Most places they come in June, hence their name.

The evening before we could hear just a whole lot of them running into the windows, attracted by the lights inside our house.

One last thing, Texas June bugs are about an inch long, a lot of places they don't get nearly that long.

--the lagniappe: Wet Pants Story

A nine-year-old was kid sitting at his desk when suddenly there is a puddle between his feet and the front of his pants are wet. He thinks his heart is going to stop because he cannot possibly imagine how this has happened. It's never happened before, and he knows that when the boys find out he will never hear the end of it. When the girls find out, they'll never speak to him again as long as he lives.

The boy believes his heart is going to stop; he puts his head down and prays this prayer, "Dear God, this is an emergency! I need help now! Five minutes from now I'm dead meat"

He looks up from his prayer and here comes the teacher with a look in her eyes that says he has been discovered.

As the teacher is walking toward him, a classmate named Susie is carrying a goldfish bowl that is filled with water. Susie trips in front of the teacher and inexplicably dumps the bowl of water in the boy's lap. The boy pretends to be angry, but all the while is saying to himself, "Thank you, Lord! Thank you, Lord!"

Now all of a sudden, instead of being the object of ridicule, the boy is the object of sympathy. The teacher rushes him downstairs and gives him gym short to put on while his pants dry out. All the other children are on their hands and knees cleaning up around his desk. The sympathy is wonderful. But as life would have it, the ridicule that should have been his has been transferred to someone else - Susie.

She tries to help, but they tell her to get out. "You've done enough, you klutz!"

Finally, at the end of the day, as they are waiting for the bus, the boy walks over to Susie and whispers, "You did that on purpose, didn't you?"

Susie whispers back, "I wet my pants once too."

Two Louisiana love bugs. Most always we see them in pairs, even flying around.

Love is wonderful!

I found these two along with a whole lot more sitting on the car after we stopped. A lot too were squashed on the front of the car. They are hard to remove.

We caught him! This is the mean little leprechaun who pushed me down the stairs while we were visiting in Ireland.

I ended up falling down a few very hard stairs. The fall knocked a finger out of joint and broke my right kneecap. I'm still recovering.

Read about that nasty incident (click here) on my May 26, 2007, blog.

The little June Bug leprechaun was found hiding out in a gift shop in Killarney.

We knew right away we could capture this little guy, kidnap him back to the states, and give him to our youngest granddaughter (GC#4 link). Then she would keep him locked forever with her collection.

She looks pleased, doesn't she? When her relatives travel, her first request for souvenirs is to bring her back snow globes from where we visited. We brought her six this time, five were from some of the states we had visited going and coming, then of course the captured leprechaun.

This guy's name is "Hero."

Hero is a nice, friendly, long-leg, thin brown conehead katydid, species neoconocephalus triops.**

We call him Hero because he is one. One day our dog, Adi, was playing out on the golf course, which we call a part of our extended backyard. It was a hot day and the grass was wet from the afternoon watering.

I wasn't watching Adi very closely, as it was pretty hot day, Texas Spring, for me to be outside--outside our nice airconditioned house.

The neighbors have a large German shepherd called Vaughn Braum who is never allowed outside without his leash. This day was the exception.

Right away ~~Von Braum~~ Vaughn Braum spotted poor Adi. Needless to say Adi's brisstling back hair didn't scare Vaughn away one bit.

Vaughn was poised to maul poor little Adi right there in the open, now being witnesses by several neighbors. These neighbors were making a loud commotion trying to call Vaughn off, to no avail.

Adi didn't retreat, but stood her ground firmly, even after the first attempt at her throat. I'm proud of Adi.

But being proud didn't save the day. It was Hero to the rescue.

Hero, unbeknownst to us, and for unknown reasons, had lodged herself in Adi's right ear.

Proabably out of fear for the large shepherd, Hero jumped out and clamped her jaws right down on Vaughn's left eyeball.

That was enough, Vaughn, yelping all the way, ran back to her house. Adi came home pretty fast after that, generally she mozies home at a leisurely pace.

Since then we have kept Hero on our back porch. She doesn't care to have a cage, we did get her a plastic 8 x 8-inch box and keep plenty of fresh greens and water there for her.

I don't know how long she will live, we are thinking she will probably die before winter. If not then we have a warm place for her in the kitchen window.

This one's Karen's car, it's

a 1982 or so Pine Wood Derby Racer

Karen did most of the work, Mrs. Jim and I were consultants for her.

She won first place. Of course technology has improved since then so it probably couldn't keep up with the modern cars. Dad was the chief speed advisor for her project. Mrs. Jim did the fashion painting advice. Karen did [most of] the work.

Please enlarge the picture by clicking on it so you can see the driver pretty good. The driver is a piece of lead fishing weight, carved to precision weight with the car weighing 1 ounce less than the maximum.

The paint is acrylic blue with a red, green, and blue butterfly on the hood. There's a rainbow at the rear, and some green growth with a flower on the deck lid. If we were smart, we could have sensed a tree-hugger growing up here with us.

Weight distribution is 63% in the rear wheels, 37% up front. The uplift in the back functioned better than a spoiler in keeping the car hugging the track surface. Many cars tipped and fell off or tumbled, hers went straight down the slotted hill track.

Also compare it with Cliff's grandson's car (link for enlargement, link for Tuesday, April 24, blog post with the picture and write up). His car did good too!

It would be interesting to race these two cars now, '82 model vs. '07. Twenty-five years difference!

I found this bug snuggled down in a chair at the Trisun Nursing Home living room in Corpus Christi, Texas. It looks soft and furry enough to pet!

It was Ghost! I found her here, in the snack room, getting ready for a nice little visit. And maybe a snack.

There is more to this cat 'tale.'

Most of the time Ghost stays in the administrative area or up front in the living room. When she strays into the bedroom wings she bears watching.

Often she will go into a room of a very sick resident and climb up on the person's bed. She will snuggle up to the resident as if to comfort that person.

Very often that resident will die soon afterwards while Ghost is still there. Somehow she can tell that the person is about to die and just wants to be there in case, as if she knows she might be needed.

One person she comforted had an unexpected heart attack and died. Somehow she knew beforehand.

I wasn't told how she got her name but I have a few guesses.

Both Ghost and Tiger, a Manx cat, were taken in as strays that came to the nursing home to hang around.
